1) Proto-Share Outbound Line Sharing Products
1) Will Proto-Share Outbound Line Sharing Products allow me to be on line and talking on the telephone at the same time?
No. These products are exclusion devices. They prohibit multiple devices plugged into the same line from interrupting each other. They do not divide a single analog line to allow multiple uses simultaneously.
2) Do Proto-Share Outbound Line Sharing Products route incoming calls to the proper device such as fax machines or modems?
No. The incoming ring signal is passed through to all connected ports. If call routing is desired, Proto-Share Fax Line Managers and Distinctive Ring Managers will automatically route the calls.
3) I want to share a line between my modem and fax machine, but only my fax machine needs to receive incoming calls. Will this product work?
Yes, this is an ideal application for this product. If the modem is not set to answer, the fax machine will get all incoming calls, and the phone line will be available to both devices for outbound calls on a first come first served basis.
4) I have a small office with multiple, limited time users of a single data line for Internet access. Is this the product for me?
Yes, this is an excellent application for the product. Proto-Share Outbound Line Sharing Products will prevent users from interrupting another user if the line is in use.
5) What devices will work with Proto-Share Outbound Line Sharing Products?
Any analog device such as telephones, answering machines, or modems will function with the products.
6) How do I use Proto-Share Outbound Line Sharing Products to prevent any extension from interrupting my modem calls in my home office?
If all outlets are wired in series, and Outbound Line Sharing Products are installed in front of the first extension, all extensions will be prohibited from interrupting the modem.
7) Proto-Share Outbound Line Sharing Devices are surge protected. What kind of surge protection does that provide?
The surge protection meets FCC Rules Part 68, Metallic Voltage Surge. This specification applies to transient voltage spikes. To assure adequate surge protection users may also want to install grounded surge suppressers on both AC power and phone lines.
8) How does the user know if a line is in use?
The Proto-Share III, 4 Port Outbound Line Sharing Device has a line in use LED. The Proto-Share II, 2 Port Line Sharing Device does not. Neither device sends a busy signal to the other ports when the line is in use. Devices attempting to access the line when it is already in use will get dead air.
9) Do the Proto-Share Outbound Line Sharing Devices require AC power?
No, the devices are all line powered. They take all needed power from the phone line.
2) Proto-Share Fax Line Manager
1) Can the Proto-Share Fax Line Manager detect the type of incoming call and route it to the proper device?
Yes. Incoming fax and voice calls can be automatically routed to the proper port. Incoming modem calls can also be routed subject to some limitations. (See next question)
2) How does the Three-Port Fax Line Manager detect incoming modem calls?
Technically it can't, as a sending modem does not normally send out a distinct tone prior to connection. However, if the sending modem is set in "receive" mode and the receiving modem is set in "send" mode, a signal is sent which the device can interpret. (Consult your modem instruction manual to change this setting.) If this is not practical the manual DTMF code of "66" can programmed into the dialing string allowing the call to be automatically routed.
3) Can the Proto-Share Fax Line Manager be used in conjunction with a PBX or any other switch?
Yes. Typically the devices are installed such that the voice port is connected to an incoming port on a PBX or switch, and modems and/or faxes are directly connected to the device. If the call is not a modem or fax call, it is re-routed to the PBX/switch.
4) Can I use telephone company features such as call waiting and voice mail with the Proto-Share Fax Line Manager?
No, because these services send a tone on the line which will interfere with modem and fax transmissions.
3) Proto-Share Distinctive Ring Manager
1) What is Distinctive Ringing Service?
Distinctive ringing service is a product provided by the local service provider (Telephone Company) in which they provide up to three different telephone numbers for a single line. There is an additional nominal fee for this service. Each of the numbers rings with a different ringing pattern. (Each provider markets this service under a different name including Custom Ringing, IdentaRing, RingMaster, Ringmate, Multi Ring, Personalized Ringing, and Smart Ring.)
2) How does the Proto-Share Distinctive Ring Manager work?
The device answers the incoming call, interprets the ringing pattern, and routes the call to the proper port.
3) What is the typical application for Distinctive Ringing Service and the Proto-Share Distinctive Ring Manager?
Distinctive Ringing Service allows the customer to assign separate telephone numbers for different applications such as voice, modem, and fax calls on a single line.
4) Can I use telephone company features such as call waiting, three way calling, and call forwarding with this device?
Yes, the Proto-Share Distinctive Ring Manager will work with these services. However, if there is heavy fax or modem use, it is not recommended to use these services as the tone generated from the phone company to indicate an incoming call may interrupt data transmissions.
5) Is the Proto-Share Distinctive Ring Manager compatible with Caller ID?
No. The identifying signal from the Phone Company is sent in the first ring, which the device absorbs when it analyses the incoming call. The caller ID device will not receive the needed information if it is behind the device.
4) Proto-Share Two Line Switch
1) What is the application for the Proto-Share Two Line Switch?
The device allows a single line telephone to be used to receive or originate calls on either of two lines.
2) Does the device automatically switch to answer incoming calls on either line?
No, a manual switch must be positioned to the ringing line. There is an extra device port on the Proto-Share Two Line Switch so that devices such as fax machines are always on a particular line. With this feature the user does not need to remember to switch the device back to the correct line.
3) How do I know if a line is already in use?
The Proto-Share Two Line Switch has line in use LED's to indicate if a line is already in use.
5) Proto-ConnectMini Patch Panel
1) How does the Proto-Connect Mini Patch Panel differ from the more common rack mounted versions?
They don't, they perform the same function but because they are modular and self contained, they can be used either in the telephone closet, or in remote locations.
2) I don't see the exact configuration I need in your web site. Do you make other versions?
Yes, we have manufactured many different versions that are not shown in our catalog or web site. Contact us if you have a different need.
3) I need to break off some lines in one location and others in a different location. Can I bridge one patch panel to another?
Yes, the version configured with both male and female 25 pair connectors is wired for the connectors to be either in or out to allow bridging to a second patch panel.
6) Proto-Protect 66 Block Covers
1) I see you make protective covers. Do you also make the 66 blocks themselves?
No, these are available from The Siemon Company or through distribution.
2) Do you offer custom colors or private labeling of this product?
Yes, all of our products are available in custom colors, with private labeling, or with no labeling. Call for details.
3) I don't see the exact cover I need. Do you make others?
Yes, we have been making protective covers since 1970. We likely have what you need. If we don't have the needed configuration, we will consider building a custom product for you.
4) Are these products UL listed?
Yes, Proto-Protect 66 Block Covers are UL listed, and meet the UL 94V flammability specifications.
5) Why should I cover my 66 block installations?
Because almost all telephone closets are dual use areas. Proto-Protect 66 Block Covers are an inexpensive way to prevent service calls due to damage or shorting of connections from foreign objects such as mop or broom handles. They are also color coordinated, and have space for individual circuit labeling, which helps identify circuits in large installations.
7) Proto-ID Central Office Identification Products
1) What are Central Office ID Products?
These are a system of removable plugs and engraved, color coded strips that were developed for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. to quickly identify special circuits in Bantam and DSX panels.
2) Are they exclusively for Southwestern Bell?
No, they are available to any local service provider, and can be custom configured or custom engraved for any application.
3) How can I get more information?
Send us a request, or visit our distributor, Atlantic Cable International. (See link to their home page in our product information page.) |
